Cultural Hegemony During the Coronavirus Pandemic

During the coronavirus pandemic crisis period, knowledge of how cultural hegemony worked was incredibly important. For many of us, the growth of what has been called “larceny capitalism” was less important than our health and that of our families.

Today, larceny capitalism continues unabated. It appears to be an accepted norm in the United States and across the world; a system in which the extraordinary riches of the few function alongside the day-to-day challenges that the majority are experiencing to make ends meet.

MAGA media outlets like Fox News and Newsmax, share misinformation, often approaching lies, with respect to what is going on in our society. In the long run, this hegemonic behavior will exacerbate the inequities that have been building for the last 40 years. Without adequate knowledge, oversight, and transparency, only the few will vigilantly monitor how the administration, legislature and judiciary are funneling enormous sums of money to elite corporations with the power to manipulate financial institutions. The current Democratic administration may have achieved certain valuable outcomes for working people but there remain sufficient numbers of right-wing actors in Congress and the Supreme and lesser courts to make decisions that undermine equity and democracy.

The 1% grows richer and more powerful when we should be supporting marginalized populations, whose low-paying jobs are inadequate for much more than survival from month to month.

If our consciousness was to be built on information, not misinformation, we would be committed to taking action in collaboration and solidarity with like-minded organizations and individuals to create more equity and justice for fighting hate and bigotry and to seek economic and social justice for the most vulnerable members of society.
